A United State of the Mind

Stress is an everyday part of life, and If not because of my relationship then I find the traffic in Los Angeles will make me loose my cool. Daily stress’ can effect your studio performance and creativity in that they can make you loose your composure easier, making the creative process seem more like a daunting chore rather than artistic process. As I’ve said in the previous post, spacial organization is a great way to relieve frustrations like writers block that may leach of energy and creative juices. However the far more energy hungry, stress can not only take a mental toll on you but a physical one as well. While everyone handles stress differently, some better than others there are some quick tips that I find might be of some help; Exercise, Vitamin B complex, relaxation techniques % breathing exercises. At the very least these will put you in a more tranquil state so that you can knock out that track before the deadline.

Tossed Salad

Sitting here in front of my mixing desk finishing up a salad and I am not sure whether I am feeling technical or creative today. I feel very unmotivated and unorganized and I think the fact that my apartment looks like a tossed salad has something to do with it. Organization is vital in any audio work, especially in the creative process. Without Organization creative ideas don’t flow as well, and you often will find yourself hitting writers block or fatiguing your ears while you loop a part trying to fit the elements together. Naturally my organizational skills are lacking at best, however I do scrap up the energy and completely organize and clean my apartment. Getting myself into that mindset helps my projects flow a lot smoother because your mind is already stretched and ready for a workout.

So today I will actually leave my audio projects till after I organize my place, when I know for sure 100% if I will be creating or mixing.

Bass in the place!

So it has now been a couple of months since I’ve set up my temporary studio space and while I can’t do any acoustic treatment here I have been doing the best I can mixing and Eqing. I know I know, but before you say “MISTAKE!” you have to know that all those settings will get taken off and I will take a DVD with all the prints and mix it in a proper studio. One thing I can tell you about having no acoustic treatment is the “Bass Crazy”. Let me explain.. Where I am sitting there is a “Bass” Hole, where low frequencies seem to dip in volume. On the adjacent wall however (where my beloved GF’s desk is) the bass is exaggerated, that is it sounds louder than it really is. So every session I have to roll off all the low frequencies and make my $1200 monitors sound like computer speakers. I really should have gotten into folk rock rather than dance music.
